Born into slavery, Henson escaped and became an author, abolitionist and minister. He founded a settlement and laborer's school for other runaway slaves. Josiah Henson is believed to have inspired the title character of Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel of 1852 Uncle Tom's Cabin.
