Martin R. Delany became the first black major to receive a field command when he was commissioned to lead the 104th Regiment of U.S. Colored Troops. Stationed in Charleston, South Carolina, he establish a training camp and recruited black officers and soldiers, but the war ended before he or his troops saw any action on the battlefield.
