Confederate General PGT Beauregard - commanded the defenses of Charleston at Fort Sumter on April 12 1861, whereupon Robert Anderson, of the Federal Army surrendered the fort to him.  Anderson, ironically, was Beauregard's former professor at West Point Academy.
