Heroism of St. William Jasper during Battle of Sullivan's Island

William Jasper was a sergeant in the 2nd South Carolina Regiment of the Revolutionary War.  Jasper distinguished himself in the defense of Fort Moultrie (Fort Sullivan) on June 28, 1776 when a shell from a British warship shot down the South Carolina flag during the Battle of Sullivan's Island.  Jasper recovered the flag and held it up under enemy fire.
