Phyllis Wheatley

Phyllis Wheatley (1753-1784) was the first African American author of a published book of poetry.  Born in West Africa, she was sold into slavery at the age of eight and transported to North America, where where she was purchased by the Wheatley family of Boston.  They taught her to read and write and encouraged her poetry.  Her book, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral was published in 1773.   Sadly, she died in poverty at age 31.
