Robert Smalls c1870s
Robert Smalls was born into Slavery in Beaufort, South Carolina. In May, 1862, Robert Smalls freed himself and other slaves by commandeering a Confederate transport ship, the CSS Planter, in Charleston Harbor. He became an American politician, publisher, businessman, and Mason.
A profound statement he made to the South Carolina legislature in 1895: "My race needs no special defense, for the past history of them in this country proves them to be the equal of any people anywhere. All they need is an equal chance in the battle of life."
