Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre.  Edgar Allan Poe stationed at Ft Moultrie on Sullivan's Island at age 18 in 1827, where he was inspired to write The Goldbug.  It is also believed he was inspired there to write The Cask of Amontillado
